The Center for Internet and Society at Stanford Law School posted an article (here) about how the Department of Justice plans to use "techlash" (stemming from privacy scandals with social media) to ban encryption on personal devices. The EARN IT Act bill, here, seeks to make "interactive computer services" providers "earn" immunity for claims regarding child sex abuse material (CSAM) online.
The argument seems very much to be that the ends (compliance with federal reporting requirements of CSAM) justify the means (erode personal encryption of data).
